Oliver Scott-Tomlin

I am a man who once wore the uniform of apartheid South Africa’s military, enforcing division with a rifle and the false armor of uninitiated masculinity. I know the cost of that path intimately—the rage, the numbness, the hunger to belong to something "noble" that only deepened the void. My military career taught me one brutal lesson: systems that demand conquest over connection will always leave men hollow.

But The Alchemy of Brotherhood isn’t just for soldiers. We’re all in combat—for our souls, our purpose, our right to define masculinity as something more than a weapon. Modern manhood is under siege, twisted by forces that profit from our isolation, our shame, and the lie that strength means silence. The battlefield isn’t “out there.” It’s in the stories we inherit, the roles we perform, and the quiet wars we wage alone.

Fatherhood cracked that armor. Sobriety forced me to stare at the reflection I’d avoided: a man on track to pass his pain to his son, just as generations before had done. This is why I founded The High Path, and why The Alchemy of Brotherhood exists. Here, we don’t glorify war or worship shadows—we meet them. Through initiation, shadow work, and raw circles of trust, we confront the stories that keep us small, violent, or numb.

I don’t have all the answers. I’m still learning how to turn the discipline of a soldier into the devotion of a father, how to alchemize duty into discernment. But I know this: Brotherhood isn’t forged in battle; it’s built when men dare to lay down their weapons—literal and metaphorical—and say, “I don’t want to carry this alone.”

Join me. Bring your anger, your grief, your hope. Together, we’ll write a new story. For our sons. For our daughters. For ourselves.

Sage Petersen

Sage Petersen is the founder of @NaturalBornVitality, a method blending nervous system optimization, primal movement, and nature-based strength for somatic weight-loss, functional strength & high performance aging.

I call myself a vitality coach, which includes movement as well as lifestyle. My main pillars for vitality are movement, nature connection, meditation, and martial arts. I teach these topics separately in personal training and classes, but I also do coaching which incorporates all the pillars.

When I was very young, my dad (who was a single dad like I am) took us to his clients' houses and the gym while he was personal training. So I've been around movement and personal training since I was about three years old! At four, I started doing martial arts and sports.

My passion is feeling good, being connected to nature, and my own vitality. Naturally, I want to increase that connection for myself. I also want to support others while they find their own connection to health and well-being, and the earth. I see human beings as stewards of the earth, and I believe that that responsibility begins with our own health and well-being.

My practice is a blend; I've studied taekwondo, some jujitsu, grappling, wrestling, Arnis (Filipino stick fighting), Kuntao (an Indonesian martial art with Chinese roots), and Tai-Chi—a beautiful movement for vitality that also has the potential to be a very effective martial art.

The Land

Our gathering place, Deer Hill basecamp, in Mancos, Colorado, is located on 130 acres of meadowland and pinion-juniper forest at the base of Menefee Mountain in the Mancos River Valley. Located 30 miles west of Durango, CO, and six miles from Mesa Verde National Park, the Mancos Valley has a long tradition of agriculture, kept alive today in multigenerational ranches and small organic farms.

At Deer Hill, you’ll enjoy cozy common spaces, beautiful grounds, and a ranch-like feel. The strawbale-constructed Meeting Place, with its many south-facing windows, wood floors, and custom woodwork provides an inspiring venue for indoor movement and sound workshops.

Deer Hill’s beautiful outdoor grounds include lush grassy fields, shady cottonwood trees, hiking opportunities right from the property, and a great palapa on which to relax in the shade by the pond. Our outdoor workshops will take place in the soft grass beneath the biggest cottonwood; this gathering space will be affectionately called The Cottonwood.

The House, where the kitchen is located, is a great place to relax and read a book or play a game, and will be our indoor alternative in case of rain for any outdoor workshops. The House creates an incredibly authentic, homey feel at Deer Hill, as it was our Founders, Doug and Beverly Capelin’s, primary residence for most of Deer Hill’s history.

The camping options are plentiful in the valley of the Mancos Hills, where you will share your nights with wildflowers and wildlife.

The bunkhouse cabins have an open floor plan, with bunkbeds along the perimeter. Tucked amongst the piñon and juniper trees, these cabins provide the classic “camp experience” for guests.

All camphouse and bunkhouse guests share the bathrooms in The Showerhouse.

The Loft is a beautiful second-story lodging option overlooking the valley with shared or private bedrooms and shared bathrooms.
